MAMMOGRAPHY
What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is an X-ray image of the breast.
How do I prepare for my mammogram?
- If you have been referred for a mammogram by your doctor, and would like to
make a booking, please contact 9076 1411
- Bookings can be made in advance.
- Please inform the booking clerk if you have breast implants.
- Please bring copies of any previous mammogram films and reports with you.
Just prior to the examination
- Wear a two piece outfit (skirt or pants and a top). You will be given a
gown, but only need to remove your clothes from the waist up.
During the mammogram
- A female radiographer will perform this examination.
- You will be asked some questions about your breast history.
- Your examination will take about 20 minutes, but this may vary. Two
pictures of each breast are routinely taken – one from the top (called a
cranio-caudal or CC view) and one from the side (called a mediolateral oblique
or MLO view). You will be asked to move into different positions. There will be
some compression of breast tissue to ensure a clear view of the tissue being
examined. This may cause discomfort, but will not last longer than 30 seconds.
- Images are checked by a Radiologist with specialized training in mammography
before you leave.
What do I do after the examination is finished?
- The radiologist’s report is automatically forwarded to your doctor.
- Return to your doctor to discuss examination results.
